Throughout its 25 year history, Ethos believes it has played a pivotal role in developing and formalising the South African private equity industry and establishing private equity as a significant and attractive alternative asset class in this region.

  • Extensive transaction experience generating superior returns over a range of economic and political cycles:
    • Since its first private equity transaction in 1984, Ethos has completed 101 private equity transactions. 86 of these investments have been realised or partially realised, generating R8.2 billion in proceeds.
  • Notably , Ethos has an unblemished record with senior lenders.
  • Led numerous complex, pioneering and large private equity transactions:
    • First public-to-private deal in South Africa – Strip Steel (1992);
    • First BEE deal – Kagiso Publishers (1994);
    • Landmark multinational transaction with significant operations across Africa – Dunlop Africa (1998);
    • Largest and most complex SA private equity deal at the time – Waco (2000); and
    • Raised the first “blind pool” buyout fund in South Africa in 1992
  • Ethos is currently investing Ethos Private Equity Fund V, a R5.6 billion (US$750 million) buyout fund closed in 2006.
