Ethos Investment Criteria & Investment Types


Ethos is exclusively in the business of private equity investment. Using the funds it manages, Ethos specialises in control acquisitions of:

  • Medium-to-large companies in South Africa that involve meaningful equity participation by management; and 
  • Good quality growth opportunities of meaningful size in South Africa and selectively in sub-Saharan Africa. 

Ethos invests in a wide variety of transaction types and sizes:

Transaction Types

  • Growth capital
  • Replacement capital 
  • Public-to-private transactions 

Transaction Sizes

  • Control acquisitions of middle-market buyouts of R750million to R3billion; and 
  • Large-sized control buyouts of more than R3billion in consortium.

Ethos prescribes to the IFC and World Bank Environment & Social Guidelines in all of its investments.

Exclusions:

  • Deep mining and mineral Exploration
  • Gambling, casinos and equivalent enterprises
  • Greenfield and brownfield enterprises
  • Property and property development
  • Start-ups

Ethos’ investment strategy includes:

  • Investing in market-leading medium-to-large sized companies with clear competitive advantages and critical mass to sustain the business through economic cycles.
  • Investing in partnership with strong management teams with experience, ability and drive to grow the business and assist Ethos in the implementation of its investment thesis.
  • Significant active involvement in the value creation process post-investment and a disciplined approach to monitoring value-add activity.
  • South Africa is increasingly becoming a significant foreign direct investor into the African continent. Ethos seeks to support South African companies that are looking to capture growth opportunities in other sub-Saharan African countries.


GEOGRAPHICAL PREFERENCES

Ethos’ predominant focus is on making investments in South Africa and selectively targets other attractive sub-Saharan economies with primary focus on Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
